ABOUT US
Birth Strides community-based childbirth education and doula services is an organization started in Memphis, TN by Certified Lactation Counselor and Doula, Terri Lee-Johnson. Noticing the lack of financially and geographically accessible childbirth classes available, Lee-Johnson decided to develop a program offering no cost group childbirth education classes at local community centers and other community spaces. The program also offers access to trained doulas (non-medical support persons) at no cost to those lacking support during their pregnancy and birth. This will hopefully make it easier for women with fewer resources to access much needed childbirth education and be a positive contribution towards improving birth outcomes in Memphis.
Mission
Birth Strides' mission is to alleviate the systemic issues of infant mortality through highly trained birth workers educating and supporting under served Black birthing families in Memphis, TN.
Vision
With a mission achieved, under-served African American communities show a reduction in maternal morbidity and infant mortality, have internal support networks, additional employment opportunities, and healthy mothers and babies.
